This is a beautiful Shiva lingham/lingam stone from the Narmada River in India. These special stones have been sacred in Hindu culture for thousands of years, and are traditionally used in temples and personal altars. Certain families are allowed to harvest the stones from the river once a year while the river is low, and the stones may be more easily collected. These stones are a crypto-crystalline form of quartz, and vibrate as such. They get their colorful patterns and designs from the presence of iron oxides. It is speculated that a meteorite may have impregnated the river bed approximately 14 million years ago, helping to create these special stones. Lingham or lingam is the Sanskrit word for phallus. These stones are named as the phallus of Shiva in reference to their shape as well as their power as a literal extension of the God. The colorful markings and patterns upon the stone represent the female, and the balance between the two. There are a number of traditional ways to interpret the many and varied markings and lines that may be found on these stones. These stones are also sometimes called cosmic eggs, due to their shape and vibration.
