Blue Tigers Eye / Hawks Eye
Tiger’s eye is a chatoyant gem, which is black, with iron oxide staining that gives raise to golden brown stripes hence its name. It initially begins as a fibrous blue mineral called crocidolite (or more commonly known as asbestos), which is made of sodium and iron. When quartz becomes embedded between the fibres of crocidolite it will result in one of two gemstones. Golden brown called Tiger’s eye or blue known as hawk’s eye. When this stone is cut en cabochon it takes on a cats eye effect due to the quartz taken on the fibrous formations and blue colour of the crocidolite, creating parallel lines within the gem. Tiger’s eye has a vitreous lustre.
